How to plan home Wi‑Fi and Ethernet

Where you need coverage, what to wire and how to test the finished network.

Map where you use the network

Mark where you take video calls, stream or regularly use your phone. Include terraces and other floors that need coverage. Look at the floor plan as you would use the house, with doors closed: thick walls and floors can weaken the signal.

Plan cable runs for fixed equipment

During a renovation, consider running Ethernet to the office, TV and Wi‑Fi access points. Agree where the cables terminate and keep the equipment accessible. Where cable runs are impractical, wireless mesh can extend coverage if its nodes can communicate over a strong signal.

Test the network where you need it

Try a video call from the office and walk between your main rooms with your phone. A speed test next to the router tells you little about the other end of the house. Keep a floor plan with labelled outlets for future changes.
